Good Planning = Good SEO = Results!

How many of us webmasters really do proper and careful SEO planning when we start our site? I dare say not a lot of us do. When a webmaster gets a brilliant idea for a website, the first impulse is to start the site and build it up fast and furious delaying good SEO techniques for later. However, the problem of lower than expected traffic would come in soon after and when that happens, it could be a hassle to correct these problems. Problems like session ids, poor or bad layouts, menus and so on will have a big impact on SEO and can result in less visitors and traffic from Search Engines in the near future. Effective SEO takes times to implement and if your site is big, then the problem becomes ten-fold due to the fact that Search Engines take time to reindex and reassess your entire site, all the while you are losing visitors to your competitors who has done better planning on their site.

Here are some steps for you to do when planning for your new site:

1. Get the important keywords and secondary keywords. In my opinion, keywords are extremely important. Choosing and figuring out the correct keywords is paramount in getting traffic from Search Engines. However, you should always refine your keyword terms and keyphrases from your site’s stats and logs even after you have finished your site. Your link building campaign should heavily rely on this information you have gathered.

2. Domain name. You should choose a suitable domain name. Changing domain names later on, you will lost all Search Engine Opyimization you have done. It is like starting all over from the beginning. It would be better to just stick with your old domain name than changing to another. Better yet, choose the correct domain name the first time round.

3. Choosing the correct title for your site’s title tag. Another important step we have here. Since the title tag is the first thing search engine sees, you should always have the correct keywords in your title, and then followed by your site’s name. This includes other sections of your site, not just the main page.

4. You should always plan your site for a neat, easily readable layout instead of being too cluttered and messy. This is good for both your human visitors and Search Engines. Even with a CMS, you should choose a CMS which allows you control over it’s layout and ensure that it is neat without too much unnecessary images or text which can confuse your visitors. A header section, a body section and a footer section is must. The body section should contain the main part of your site’s content. Navigation menus should be placed at the top or to the side.

5. Good menu names. “Home” is useless for an anchor text, unless your keywords include the word home, make sure you have proper names (which means keywords) for your anchor text in your menus. Why? Because menus usually appear in every page of your site, and with every anchor text is a vote (although not as valued as an external inbound link) for your page.

6. Getting the correct URLs. URLs are important. They are like your house address, without them nobody cannot access your page. If you change your page’s URL in the future, any rankings and all the effort that goes with it will disappear just like changing your domain name. Thus you should plan for yourself the URLs for your pages and avoid changing them.

7. Then you should figure out which pages you need to optimize for which keywords. Think of them as landing pages where your visitors from Search Engines arrive. And these pages should have easy access to other important parts of your site. It is difficult to optimize keywords for your mainpage, so the best way is to optimize these landing pages.

8. Link building campaign. But now you should have already completed your website and your next step should be building inbound links. There are many ways to get links and it is beyond the scope of this article. But it is necessary to note that using the proper anchor text for these inbound links will be worth more to our site than just merely links. Thus having the correct keywords and keyphrases and knowing which page to link back to are important for SEO.

Practicing good SEO means you have good planning. It takes a little hardwork and effort, but it will surely pay off when you see the results.
